Dr. Laura Johnson has been working at WNED FM for the classical music station 94.5 for three and a half years now. In 1981, she started working in classical music radio. Now she says, “It’s like going back to the past.”What most might not know is her impressive background in music. Johnson graduated with a degree in music from Florida State University in Brass Performance, a Bachelor of Music degree. “My father was a professional musician, a tenor, who performed with the Atlanta Symphony Chorus for 18 years. They won a number of Grammy's while he was a member of the chorus.” She grew up in a very musical family, her parents met while performing in a musical at the University of Georgia. Her mother taught her music theory and piano lessons when she was young. As she got older she began to study the viola and French horn.“I was given the opportunity to start the french horn in the seventh grade, which was unusual in the Auburn, Alabama Public School system, and I went on to become the youngest musician to attend the Alabama Allstate competition.” Johnson had major success with music early. She travelled to Tallahassee, Florida for private lessons from Florida State University in ninth grade and played in the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. She was part of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and performed with the Atlanta Symphony as a senior while at Florida State. Unfortunately, she was advised to stop playing because of the impact on her ear and hearing. While Johnson began attending Florida State University she became ill with a major ear infection. The doctors on the university sent her to an ear, nose, and throat specialist. “He said that I had an "incompetent" eustacian tube and that the back pressure from blowing the horn was driving germs into my middle ear. He worked with me for the next four years, but told me that I should give up my dream of being a professional brass musician.” Her father had major problems with his ears that lead to partial deafness. Her health took priority. Luckily, while at Florida State, Johnson took courses about electronic music and sound recording. Her passion of music brought her to another desire of radio broadcasting. Johnson also has a master's degree in business administration from the University of West Florida. Over the course of her career, Johnson has done it all. She has been an announcer, music director, station manager, a music and programmer at radio stations in Florida, Alabama and Arkansas. When on the job at WNED FM in Buffalo she does a variety of things: she announces classical music programs, contributes in production of special programming for the Holiday Season, she has hosted and and produced a program called "Inside the Music Library.”

The biggest benefit for her is being able to keep up with current equipment and people in the field. “I feel that working there is an asset to my teaching.,” she said. “With technology changing so rapidly it is hard to keep up if you’re not working in the field professionally.” What Johnson has learned at WNED she is then able to relay back to her students. WNED broadcasts main audience is for Buffalo and Canada, however, with phone apps they are now able to reach thousands around the world. There are over 20 to 30 thousand listeners in other countries. Some of the biggest include: South Korea, Singapore, and Canada. Johnson has been at Fredonia for almost eight and a half years. By working at WNED she has been able to have the chance to ask and learn about equipment issues, broadcasting software, technical issues, regulatory issues, etc. “By working at WNED, I see how hard they have to work with their computers, and that gives us perspective and information about the challenges of managing technology for broadcast stations. I now see that a tech specialty will help students who want to work in radio.” WNED allows classes to visit and staff comes to Fredonia to speak to students. Johnson finds the work exciting but her most important take: “I’m a better teacher because of this opportunity to work at WNED.” I'm a paragraph. Click here to add your own text and edit me.
